About

Welcome! My name is sgubkid, I’m an SIM-University at Buffalo’s Communication student. As of Fall 2017, based on feedback from readers, I began recruiting new writers as I have already graduated. Reviews from Fall 2014 to Summer 2017 are written by me. You can read my final post in Fall 2017 here.

As this blog is about module reviews, the writers will only post after the end of each semester. Do share this blog with your fellow SIM-UB friends if you find it useful! 😀

Before this blog was created…

I was an Enthusiastic freshman, Excited and Eagerly waiting for school to start. Why? Because University is a place where I am able to pick the courses that I want to study, customise my own timetable, and take courses from other majors, which is the biggest factor in my decision to choose UB out of the other schools in SIM. At the same time, the idea of making new friends of various ages and backgrounds made me feel uneasy and anxious at the same time. Will I be able to get friends? If no, who can I turn to for help in school? Who can I ask for advice on which module to take, which teacher is good, etc., especially when there is a wide variety of interesting classes offered across the various majors in SIM-UB?

Unfortunately, although I have a few close friends and also got to know many other classmates, we were all enrolled in the same semester, thus we took almost the same modules each time. This means that I don’t have anyone to ask for opinions/information for the modules that I might take in future! This made me think that there were probably others out there who were experiencing the same situation as me.

Then, the idea of starting a blog to write module reviews came to my mind. It’s kinda funny that I thought of this because this means that I’d be writing for students out there whom I don’t know, and also probably won’t ever know who am I either. Will anyone be interested in reading module reviews from some random person online? Lol. Also, my posts won’t benefit me in any way. Maybe it can serve as a memory of my time in SIM-UB?

Eh, but I’m very sure there are people out there who clueless about the modules and I really want to help them and contribute a little towards their decision making process when they pick their modules so that they won’t be as clueless as I was. So I was like: “Aiya, don’t think so much lah. Just start writing lah.” Thus, without further hesitation, I went ahead with my idea…

And that’s how this blog came about!

But of course, this blog is for anyone and everyone to read! It’s not like you can’t come here to read this blog if you already have a lot of friends/seniors to give you advice. Yup, so you can come in anytime you want!

P.S. The words course/module/class are used interchangeably throughout this blog. They all mean the same thing!

    • Hi, before you start your first semester, there will be a freshman workshop conducted by your Academic Advisors, where they will tell you all you need to know about adding modules, exemptions, etc. They will also give you a very important worksheet which lists which modules you are exempted from and how many free electives to take.

  3. Hi!

Would like to enquire about minors. Are there any requirements (grades wise) to be able to take up a minor? Would it be possible to take a Socio major and a Marketing minor?

    • Hi!

I remember it is possible to take any minor and there is no minimum grade requirement to embark on one. You need to complete and pass all the required courses for the minor though.

Please see your Academic Advisor first and tell her that you want the additional modules that you’ll be taking, to count towards a minor. Otherwise it will all just be free electives.

  4. Hello! A bit late in joining the party but my friends and I would like to update with reviews for the modules we took. Are you still open to accepting module reviews?

  5. Hey, thanks for this website! This would definitely be helpful for my future semesters >.<

Just a quick question as I am currently finishing my first sem, are the free electives required to take on? In addition, if I have some electives required for my major, how do I choose it? (ps I might not have these kind of knowledge because I missed the freshmen orientation & workshops etc… oops)

    • Hello!

Yes, you have to complete all your free electives. Any class would fulfill the free electives.

Different major requires different electives and Pathway modules; you need to book an appointment to see your AA so that she can advise you on this since you missed the freshman workshops.

    • Hi! Nope, you don’t have to attend them. The consultation hours are after lessons so that if you have any doubts, you can stay behind and ask your instructor about it. If you have no questions, you can leave after your lesson ends.
